GOD PROVIDED FOOD
For three days of unabated fury, a blizzard had raged across the plains of Nebraska. The tiny cabin that stood alone in the plains was nearly buried; the snow had piled high around it. Inside the cozy little home, Mother Barker and her three children sat quietly talking. There were Harry, twelve years old; Ruth, three; and Marion, who had just passed her tenth birthday. Father Barker was an traveling preacher and spent a small part of his time at home. Just before the storm began, they had received word from him that he was still in some distant part of his great prairie-parish and would not return for several weeks.
The Barkers had dedicated their lives to God's service. They had left a comfortable home in the east to settle in the mid-western prairies as pioneer preachers. Their salary was small. And sometimes they did not earn enough money to cover all of their expenses.
Leaving friends had been especially hard for the children, but they were learning new and interesting things. Mother Barker was an especially good teacher and slowly the little ones were adjusting to the loneliness of living on the isolated prairie.
