THE BOAT THAT REFUSED TO BE BURNT

PART 1

"Marsta, Marsta," the tall Solomon islander shouted as he ran, "The Japanese are coming, plenty of them." Panting, he continued, "They are coming, they are almost here." Stopping in front of the Englishman, a major serving in the British army during World War II, the brawny islander took a deep breath. For months, the Englishman had hidden in the dark jungles surrounding the Morovo lagoon, receiving and transmitting information about the movements of the Japanese to Allied headquarters.

Furtively taking stock of his situation, the major glanced at His Majesty's fleet in the Morovo lagoon: the Dadavata, the Portal, the Jones_ mission boats that had been confiscated by the English government for the war effort. He had to get out of there_ quickly. His primary function had been to spy on the Japanese. He had faithfully discharged his obligations but the time had come for him to leave this jungle outpost.
