Toiling through the dark night, they unshipped the mast and removed the awning and rigging that had not burned. They took the engine to pieces. The pieces were passed around to different families with the warning, “ Take care of these pieces. Guard them with your life.” Families made bracelets, belts and necklaces out of the engine’s nuts and bolts. They distributed these among family members. Larger pieces they buried in the ground or hung in trees. Before the night was over, the natives disassembled the engine and hid its parts. They uprooted palm trees from the jungle and planted them around the deck of the vessel and by the light of dawn it seemed the vessel was just another part of the jungle.
