GOD PROVIDES
There was no food in the house and there was no way to borrow or beg any. Food was scarce in this small village so recently devastated by World War I. The small amount available to villagers came from distant places and was sold at exorbitant prices. Most villagers simply could not afford to feed either themselves or their families.
Although the cease fire had become official, the sounds of battle still lingered in the air. Entire nights spent down in the basement dreading the morning, fearing bullets sizzling down dark streets and alleys, confirmed that in the hearts of many, the war was not over. Aside from death and disability, war had changed the lives of the villagers in other ways—all the crops had been destroyed. No longer did this proud self-sufficient village produce enough food to feed its people. What had not been destroyed by bullets had been stolen by soldiers who needed to eat.
At worship, Father announced that there was absolutely no food left in the house.
